Many IELTS test takers lose points in Listening not because the questions are too difficult — but because of small, repeated mistakes. In this guide, we break down the most common ones with examples and practical fixes.
Example:
The question says: “Write no more than two words.”
You answer: “train station in London” → ❌
✅ Correct answer: “train station”
Fix:
Always check if the question allows one word, two words, or a number. Overwriting = 0 marks.
Example:
You write: “enviroment” instead of “environment” → ❌
Fix:
Practice high-frequency IELTS words. Spelling errors cost marks even if the answer is correct in meaning.
Example in audio:
“He was thinking of buying a used car... but eventually chose a motorcycle.”
You write: “used car” → ❌
✅ Correct: “motorcycle”
Fix:
Expect corrections or changes in the speaker's ideas. The final decision is usually what’s correct.
Example:
You miss answers because you're still writing the previous one.
Fix:
Use shorthand or underline key words in the question paper. Listen actively — don’t try to write full sentences. You’ll have time to transfer answers.
Example:
You don't understand what to do in a flowchart or multiple choice section.
Fix:
Familiarize yourself with all types: Form, Map, Flowchart, MCQ, Matching. Each has a unique strategy.
Example:
The question: “Where did the man go?”
The audio says: “He visited the exhibition.”
You’re waiting for the word “museum” → ❌
✅ Correct: “exhibition”
Fix:
Practice identifying paraphrases. IELTS rarely uses the exact words from the question.
Example:
“He said $13.50 at first, but then corrected it to $30.15.”
You wrote: “13.50” → ❌
Fix:
Listen carefully to numbers and double-check during the 10-minute review period.
Example:
You leave 3 answers blank in Section 3.
Fix:
There’s no penalty for wrong answers. Always write something — use context clues or logic.
Example:
You do well in practice, but panic in the real test.
Fix:
Use full-length tests with audio and real-time limits. Simulate the test environment at least twice a week.
Example:
You keep repeating the same errors but don’t notice them.
Fix:
After each test, review answers with transcripts or explanations. Track your progress by question type.
